It's said that a mojito-like drink was invented when Sir Francis Drake - knighted by Elizabeth I after helping defeat the Spanish Armada and known to the Spanish as the ruthless pirate, El Draque - found himself near the city of Havana.

Called El Draque, the cocktail had aguardiente (early rum), sugar, lime and mint. Originally the drink was used for medicinal purposes to help treat scurvy and dysentery. The aguardiente was then replaced with rum and the mojito was born.

This Mojito recipe was made a worldwide success by celebrities including Ernest Hemingway who was spending time in Cuba as a journalist when he fell in love with the fascinating taste of the Mojito and helped raise it to where it is today - one of the most famous cocktails in the world.
